Varying Types of Endoscopy
Endoscopy remains consistent in making its name known in the field of diagnostic medicine. Just like in naming endoscopes, the nomenclature of endoscopic procedures is also named after the body part that is being critically examined. The following are some of the different types of endoscopy that make use of either rigid or flexible fiberoptic instrument:
- Laparascopy: the careful examination of the internal organs of the abdomen made possible by making just a tiny incision in the abdominal wall to slip the endoscope
- Colonoscopy: the assessment of the 5 parts of the intestinal tract specifically the cecum, rectum, ascending colon, transverse colon, and large bowel
- Bronchoscopy: the examination of the airways especially the lower part
- Proctoscopy: Unlike Colonosscopy, this type of endoscopy focuses more just the examination of the rectum and large bowel
- Arthroscopy: the assessment of the cartilages in joints and soft tissues
